Academic Handbook

Academic Integrity

As a Christian learning community, Zollikon Institute is committed to the ideals of truth, honesty, and
personal responsibility. We believe academic integrity reflects our calling to live with integrity before
God and others. Students are expected to uphold these values by completing their own work
honestly and giving proper credit to others’ ideas.

Policy Statement

All students are expected to uphold the highest standards of academic honesty. Cheating,
plagiarism, fabrication of information, or any other form of academic dishonesty is strictly
prohibited.

Examples of Academic Dishonesty Include:

  • Submitting someone else’s work as your own

  • Copying or sharing answers during exams or quizzes

  • Using unauthorized materials or devices

  • Plagiarizing (using someone else’s words, ideas, or data without proper citation)

  • Falsifying or inventing data or sources

  • Assisting others in committing academic dishonesty

Expectations

Students are responsible for understanding and following proper citation and research practices.
When in doubt, ask your instructor for guidance.

Consequences

Violations of this policy may result in academic penalties (such as a failing grade on the assignment
or in the course) and/or disciplinary action up to suspension or dismissal from Zollikon Institute.

Reporting and Resolution

Suspected violations will be reviewed fairly and confidentially. Students will have an opportunity to
respond before decisions are made.

AI Use

At Zollikon, we want you to learn how to use AI tools in a way that deepens your learning and honors
Christ. We don’t ban AI, but we expect you to use it with wisdom and honesty.

  • Each instructor will tell you how AI can be used in their class. If you’re not sure, ask before you
    use it.

  • AI can help you brainstorm, learn, and polish your work, but it can’t replace your own effort,
    voice, and understanding.

  • AI can make mistakes, so always fact-check and think critically about what it gives you.

  • If you used AI on an assignment, say so (for example, “This paper was written by me with
brainstorming help from ChatGPT, then edited and fact-checked by me”).

As a student at Zollikon, you should never:

  • Turn in AI-generated work as your own without permission.

  • Use AI on tests, take-home quizzes or exams, or any assignment for which your instructor says
    you may not use AI.

  • Blindly trust AI without verifying it.

AI can be a helpful tool, but it is your responsibility to use it wisely and in line with our academic
integrity policy and biblical values.

Staff and Instructor Conflict and Grievance Plan

From time to time, conflict may arise within the Zollikon Institute community between a student and
the institute’s instructors and/or staff .  We will practice Matthew 18 in creating an atmosphere of
respect.

Step One: If a student has a problem/grievance with Zollikon Institute and/or Zollikon Institute
staff or instructors, they are encouraged to first speak directly with the person involved rather than
discussing the problem with other people.  This approach from Matthew 18 avoids slander and
gossip.

Step Two: If the issue is not resolved, or if the student feels unable or unsafe to speak directly
with the person involved, the student should meet with the Chief Academic Officer in person or in
writing as soon as possible to ask for assistance with the resolution of the problem.

Step Three: If the problem is still not resolved the student should provide the facts of the
problem, which will be presented to the Board President (Chair) to ask for assistance in resolving the
issue.  If an issue involves the Chief Academic Officer, then the Board President (Chair) will take on
the responsibility to respond to the grievance in the place of the Chief Academic Officer.

Interpersonal Conflict and Grievance Plan

From time to time, conflict may arise within the Zollikon Institute community between students.  We
will practice Matthew 18 in creating an atmosphere of respect.

Step One: If a student has a problem/grievance with a fellow Zollikon Institute student, they are
encouraged to first speak directly with the person involved rather than discussing the problem with
other people.  This approach from Matthew 18 avoids slander and gossip.

Step Two: If the issue is not resolved, or if the student feels unable or unsafe to speak directly
with the person involved, the student should meet with the Director of Student Life in person or in
writing as soon as possible to ask for assistance with the resolution of the problem.

Step Three: If the problem is still not resolved the student should provide the facts of the
problem, which will be presented to the Board President (Chair) to ask for assistance in resolving the
issue.  If an issue involves the Director of Student Life, then the Board President (Chair) will take on
the responsibility to respond to the grievance in the place of the Director of Student Life.

Nondiscrimination

Zollikon Institute is committed to providing a welcoming and respectful environment for all
students. We do not discriminate based on race, color, national origin, sex, age, marital status,
disability or any other status protected by law. Harassment or discrimination of any kind will not be
tolerated. Students are expected to treat one another with respect and dignity in keeping with our
Christian values. Concerns about discrimination or harassment should be reported to the Executive
Director or designated staff.

Sexual Harassment

Zollikon Institute is committed to providing a safe, respectful, and Christ-centered environment for
all students. Sexual harassment of any kind is strictly prohibited.

Sexual harassment includes unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, or other
verbal, visual, or physical conduct of a sexual nature that creates an intimidating, hostile, or
offensive environment. Examples include unwanted touching, sexual jokes or comments,
inappropriate messages or images, and any behavior of a sexual nature that makes others feel
unsafe or disrespected.

All students are expected to treat others with dignity and respect. Any student who experiences or
witnesses sexual harassment should report it immediately to the Provost or designated staff.
Zollikon Institute will investigate all reports promptly and confidentially. Retaliation against anyone
who reports harassment in good faith is strictly prohibited.

Violations of this policy may result in disciplinary action, up to and including suspension or
dismissal.

Health

Zollikon Institute is committed to promoting the health, safety, and well-being of all students.
Students are expected to take personal responsibility for their health and to be considerate of the
health of others in our community.

Students who are ill with contagious conditions (such as flu, COVID-19, or other communicable
diseases) should stay home and notify their instructor or program leader as soon as possible.
Students may be asked to provide documentation or follow recommended health guidelines before
returning to class.

Basic first aid supplies are available on campus. For emergencies, call 911 immediately. Zollikon
Institute does not provide on-site medical care but will assist students in accessing local healthcare
services if needed.

Students with ongoing medical conditions, disabilities, or special health needs are encouraged to
communicate with the Executive Director to discuss reasonable accommodations or support.

Internet and Computer Access

Technology and internet access at Zollikon are provided to support learning, research, and
communication. Students are expected to use these resources responsibly, respectfully, and in
accordance with Christian values.

By using school internet, students agree to the following:

  1. Use for Learning: I will use the internet only for schoolwork, research, or activities appropriate
to the values of the institution.

  2. Respect Others: I will not send or view hateful, threatening, or inappropriate messages,
    images, or content.

  3. Protect Privacy: I will not share my passwords, personal information, or the personal
    information of others.

  4. Be Honest: I will not plagiarize, cheat, or attempt to bypass security settings or access
    restricted sites.

  5. Care for Equipment: I will treat all devices and digital tools with care and report any damage or
    problems to a teacher.

Consequences: Violations of this policy may result in restricted access, disciplinary action, or other
consequences as determined by school leadership.

By using school technology, you agree to follow this policy and use the internet in a way that
honors God, others, and your own integrity.

prorated basis.

Weeks 1 100% refund

Week 2 – 60% refund

Week 3 – no refund

Student Personal Property

Zollikon Institute is not responsible for any student personal property in the case of a loss. We
recommend students cover their belongings with their own renters insurance or liability coverage.

Campus Dress Code

The goal of Zollikon Institute dress code is to promote modesty, professionalism, and an educational
atmosphere.

Students are expected to follow the dress codes of the church congregations where they regularly
attend, or are members.

All Students and staff:

  • Logos or writing on clothing must not be distracting to the educational atmosphere or bring
attention to or promote anything contrary to Zollikon Institute Values.
  • Women shall reflect modesty in necklines and tops shall be sleeved. Skirts shall be of modest
length and leggings shall not be worn without a skirt.
  • Male students shall wear sleeved, collared shirts, and long pants. Sweat pants shall not be worn
    to class.
  • All pants shall be loose fitting, and clothing that is worn should not draw immodest attention to
the shape of one’s body. (This applies to both men and women.)

Full-Time Student Policies

Discipleship

Full-time, residential students at Zollikon are given access to Zollikon’s discipleship program. While
this program is not mandatory, this program is highly encouraged. If students choose not to
participate in Zollikon’s discipleship program, they must submit a formal request to Director of
Student Life, Anya Miller, as well as participate in a meeting with Director of Student Life, Anya
Miller, and the Director of Operations, Cordell Weaver, explaining why they should be exempt from
the program.

Regardless of a student’s participation in Zollikon’s discipleship program, students are expected to
show dedication to prayer and Scripture reading and are expected to be accountable with
likeminded believers. Such accountability could include a mentor, a church accountability group, or
accountability from their home congregation.

Sexual Integrity

The college affirms the sacredness of the marriage bed, as instituted by God, and therefore
renounces sexual activity outside of the marriage relationship between one man and one woman.

The college recognizes that, in today’s society, temptation to participate in such actions is ever
increasing, making it difficult for men and women to guard their hearts and minds in Christ Jesus
and making them susceptible to addictions that are difficult to escape. Therefore, such situations in
which a student is found to be engaging in such sexual activities are to be met with both grace and
truth.  The college is dedicated to providing tools, resources, and support to help students live a life
of chastity and freedom.

The following are a list of guidelines for students in general:

  1. If a student commits a sexually immoral act, they are expected to be accountable either to their
mentor or to their discipleship group, making their specific actions explicit and exhibiting a true
desire for transformation and change. Please note, however, that the student life will not police
this area. We want to foster an environment of trust and personal responsibility. Therefore, it is
the student’s responsibility to seek help and accountability from their mentors and discipleship
    groups.

  2. If a student demonstrates a pattern of repeated sexually delinquent behaviors, Zollikon Institute
expects students to make use of the resources for sexual integrity provided by Zollikon Institute.

Dating Policy

Zollikon Institute values Christian community, spiritual maturity, and personal integrity. The following
expectations exist to help students maintain focus on spiritual growth, learning, and building a
respectful, supportive community.

    1. New Relationships:

      • Students are encouraged not to begin new dating relationships during their first year of
        enrollment.

      • Minors must obtain the approval of their parents or legal guardians before beginning a
        dating relationship.

    2. Existing Relationships: Students who are in a dating or courtship relationship must disclose this
to the Director of Student Life before the start of the term. Such couples will work with staff to
agree upon accountability guidelines appropriate to Zollikon’s values.

    3. Expectations for Behavior:

      • Romantic relationships should be characterized by Christian discretion and accountability.

      • Physical displays of affection (hand-holding, hugging, etc.) should be avoided while on
Institute premises or during Institute events.

      • Exclusive pairing that separates couples from the larger community is discouraged; group
        socialization is encouraged.

    4. Spiritual Emphasis: We encourage dating couples to reach out to a married couple to walk alongside them in their dating journey.
    5. Enforcement: Violations of this policy may result in counseling, formal warnings, or, in serious cases, dismissal from the program

    6. Resources for Dating Couples:

      • The Meaning of Marriage by Timothy and Kathy Keller

      • The Sacred Search by Gary L. Thomas
